Higher Education Proposal

My Values

Education is a right.

Higher education is a public good and essential for developing the workforce that Oregon needs.

Everyone should have access to quality, affordable higher education regardless of race, class, gender, socio-economic status, immigration status, sexual orientation, veteran status, or disability status.

Higher education institutions should have shared governance that includes student voice, public accountability, and community stakeholders.

Earning a higher education degree should not put someone into lifelong debt.

Community colleges should be free of charge to all low-income students, including the cost of all required materials.

Any changes to student fees should go through a public process.

Human subjects research is critical in a democracy but must be done in an ethical and transparent way.

Campuses should be safe spaces for all people.

Academic freedom is important in protecting faculty and students.

Tangible Policy Changes

Expand need-based financial aid.

Expand student debt relief programs for public service including teaching, first responders, and health professionals in areas of high need.

Build on the Oregon Promise to cover the entire cost of community college, including books and other material costs, for all low-income Oregonians.

Expand food pantries on campuses to better support students who struggle with food insecurity.

Increase the recruitment and retention of faculty of color working in Oregon’s community colleges and four-year institutions.

Establish safe spaces on campus for women, people of color, LGBTQ+ students, international students, and non-traditional students and invest in these communities.

Require all publicly-funded research be made available to the public.

Collect and publicize longitudinal data on costs of attendance, graduation rates, and long term employment statistics for every school.

Support the DREAM Act.

Maintain in-state tuition for undocumented students.

Allow student-athletes to profit off of their name, image, and likeness.

Provide all students with access to primary care and other essential health care services.

Provide health insurance for all part-time and adjunct faculty (Similar to HB 4146 from the 2020 session)

Establish and enforce livable wages and benefits for graduate research and teaching assistantships.
